Durai’s research work is related to characterization of advanced polymer composite materials. These include processing of thermoset and thermoplastics resin systems. Notable results have been achieved in development of damaged tolerant Iso-Truss and Iso-Grid aircraft structures, low cost and reliable Micro Air Vehicle (MAV)/ Un-manned air vehicle (UAV) airframes, wind turbine blade manufacturing and novel thermoforming techniques of structural foams. In addition, he has developed Acoustic Emission (AE) techniques for damage detection in polymer composites. He is currently exploring an indigenous paint based PZT sensor for damage detection application in composites.
Area of interest: Composite manufacturing, UAV/MAV airframe design/manufacturing and PZT paint based sensor development.
