Dr. Pavan Kumar has a Masters Degree (1993) and a Doctoral Degree (1999) in Engineering from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He has carried out his research work, in the Structural Engineering Group of Civil Engineering Department, on the topics “Assessment of Shell Theories for the Static Analysis of Laminated Circular Cylindrical Shells” and “Interlaminar Fracture Toughness of Composites - Higher Order Shear Deformation Beam Theories” respectively for MSc [Engg] and PhD Theses.
He joined Structural Technologies Division of CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL), Bangalore in April 1998. During his career, he has contributed to Research and Technology Development Projects (supported by CSIR-NAL & CSIR, New Delhi), Sponsored Projects (from ADA-Bangalore, VSSC-Trivandrum and Naval Aircraft Yard - Kochi) and Civil Aircraft Development Projects (SARAS, RTA and NCA) of CSIR-NAL. Also, he has worked on a project from automotive industry. He received “Young Scientist of the Year 2001” award from CSIR-NAL for the "Significant contribution to the evaluation of the general-purpose FINESSE (Finite Element Structural Synthesis Expert) element library". He has 10 Journal papers, 30 conference papers and several technical project documents to his credit and guided 13 students for their Master’s degree dissertation work. He has reviewed papers for Journals and Conferences and in particular to the “Journal of Aerospace Sciences and Technologies” published by The Aeronautical Society of India.
His works and interests are in the area of Computational Structural Mechanics covering Laminated Composite Structures, Finite Elements, Aircraft Structural Analysis, Riveted Joints, Thermal Stress Analysis, Structural Optimization, Fracture Mechanics, and Fatigue & Fracture of Metallic Structures.
