Dr. Chetan S. Jarali received his Doctor of Philosophy in Micromechanics and Modelling of High Performance Adaptive Shape memory Composites with Multifunctional Materials in 2012. His Master’s specialization is in Design Engineering from K.L.E College of Engineering and Technology, Visvesvaraya Technological University, (VTU), Belgaum, Karnataka State, India. The Bachelor’s Degree is specialized in Mechanical Engineering from Sri Dharmastala Manjunatheshwar College of Engineering and Technology (SDMCET), Karnataka University (KUD), Dharwad, Karnataka State, India.
Research and development
New generations of materials having adaptive properties with multifunctional actuation and sensing capabilities, aided by improved mechanical, thermal and electrical properties have become the requirements to develop innovative systems. This has been the motivation towards my past and present research activities.
Past and Current Research
The PhD dissertation work investigates the micromechanics approaches to model the thermo- mechanical behaviours of shape memory alloy composites. The research is primarily focussed on understanding the shape memory behaviours of composites, which are inherent in multifunctional materials like shape memory alloys and polymers. The general goal of my current and future research involves investigating the principles underlying the characterization and computational modelling of Carbon nanotubes, Thermal and Magnetic Shape memory Alloys, Shape Memory Polymers, and Piezofiber/Microfibers; design of their counterpart hybrid composite structures; development of fabrication procedures and implementation to real-time structures. The development of the associated mechanics to capture the required physics of micro-nano structures made of multifunctional materials. Interests involve studies on the effect of micro fiber dispersion and alignment, adaptive fiber actuation, nanotube dispersion and agglomeration, microfiber-carbon nanotube bonding, interfacial stress transfer between fibers and epoxy, and between nano and microfibers themselves, effective properties prediction, strength analysis including fatigue and failure are the central questions that drive most of my important research activities. He has guided Master thesis as well as Ph.D thesis and is currently guiding Doctorate students.
